Digital Language Lab Systems
Decades ago, the audiocassette recorder was the cornerstone of almost every language lab system, but today, this mechanical beast has been replaced by a computer program - called a virtual recorder - that runs on a personal computer, and enables students to listen and watch multimedia program materials and record their own oral and written responses. Virtual Recorders are functionally similar to audiocassette recorders, but without the fuss and bother of tapes!
In virtual language labs, the virtual recorder may be the only tool that students have available to support self-study activities. In most physical language lab environments, the language lab system includes a more comprehensive set of tools that facilitate a broad range of language learning activities.
